Writing Magic Flowers: Daffodil

The first version of the Daffodil chapter in Magic Flowers was written 20 years ago, during my VERY first quarter at community college.

It was a creative writing response to The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka in my English 101 class.

At the time, I had no idea I was setting the stage for a time-travel collaboration with my future self.

The paper I turned in to my professor? Long gone. The computer it was written and saved on? Also a relic of the past. So when it came time to bring Daffodil into Magic Flowers, I had to start from scratch—piecing it back together from memory, carefully stitching in new details, and refining it through numerous rounds of edits with my amazing editor, Ariel Gore.

It was a magical process.

A conversation across time.

When the story finally reached the right place, my younger self and current self gave each other a triumphant high five. Some stories take years to bloom, and this one was worth the wait.
