Last week a friend asked if I had any advice for starting a creative writing practice, and here are a few of my tips.
1. Think back on your life, and make a list of everything you’ve enjoyed writing, whether big or small.
-Did you have a pen pal as a kid?
-Have you ever been obsessed with rhyming and making up silly poems or songs?
-Did you write 90s grunge band romance novellas during your junior year in high school? Just me? Ok.
2. Take stock of your list and start there. Start with what brings you joy. Make a commitment that writing is for you only—at least for a while.
-Don’t think about an audience or what anyone else would think. At first, your only audience is you.
3. Make a list of all the books you've ever read that have blown your mind.
4. That list of books you just made? Look up those authors' websites.
-Do they offer any workshops you might want to take? Go down those rabbit holes.
5. Start a Morning Pages routine. Get a notebook and fill three pages with whatever comes to mind first thing in the morning. There’s no pressure. No right or wrong way to do this. Think of it as an exercise to clear your mind, connect with yourself, and spark creativity.
